Providing sales and marketing strategies as well as various internal and external business communication programs for years, Richard Smith brings vast experience and expertise in various areas of business communications including advertising, sales promotion, and marketing collateral; technical, scientific, and clinical communications; business and brand identity programs; public, professional, and patient relations; training and educational programs; digital and social media; tradeshows, meetings, presentations, and events; broadcast, corporate and crisis communications; and communications for organizational development and change.
As a marketing and branding strategist and communication specialist, Smith has contributed to the growth and development of many organizations and their brands, nationally and internationally, in various industries including health care, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals; information technology and telecommunications; financial and insurance industries; consumer goods and services; professional consulting services; manufacturing; education and professional institutes and associations; waste management and environment; and the publishing industry. He has created and developed hundreds of highly-effective marketing and communication programs for numerous organizations all for advancing their business strategies, market share, revenues, and growth from small businesses and entrepreneurial start-ups to Fortune 500 firms including Johnson & Johnson, Merck, AT&T, Merrill Lynch, C. R. Bard, Pfizer, Becton Dickinson, Chubb, Eastman Kodak, Arthur Andersen, Time Warner, Ortho Biotech, Stryker Orthopaedics, Schering, and B. Braun to name a few.
Having worked on both Madison Avenue and Medicine Avenue, Smith offers corporate and business experience as well as entrepreneurial experience having served in positions as president and owner, vice president and creative director, business development and account services manager, writer, designer, media and production manager, and more in advertising agencies, communication and digital media companies, education and design firms, video and broadcast production companies, publishers and public relations firms in the greater New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas as well as Southwest Florida.
Smith has written, designed, and published numerous white papers, scientific monographs, educational programs, business process techniques, surgical training programs, clinical poster sessions, films and documentaries, a three-volume orthopedic nursing guide, a seven-volume patient management and marketing program on managing asthma for the American Lung Association, and patient therapeutic and preventative compliance programs. In addition, he is a speaker and author on various topics of communication and creativity, marketing and branding, image and identity, and the psychology of visual perception. Smith has authored several white papers on the theories and practices of communication and an in-depth series of articles regarding patient compliance for a pharmaceutical organization.
Smith completed his undergraduate work in fine arts at Pratt Institute, a foundation program for interior design at the New York School for Interior Design, and graphic design and visual arts at Kean College. In addition, he did coursework at Parsons School of Design, The New School, and the School of Visual Arts for illustration, graphic design, printing and printmaking, advertising and copywriting, and the study of the psychology of visual perception. Smith completed an eight-year independent study program with Sophie Wall Onton, Parsons School of Design, New York and Paris, in illustration and painting as well. Later he served an apprenticeship for lithographic printmaking with Lautrec and completed other business management, marketing, and communication courses as well as certificate programs. Smith is certified in Lean Six Sigma, Project Management, Total Quality Management, and other business and leadership training programs.
Of note, Smith established the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Warren County NJ, a non-profit organization serving the needs of homeless families and children in Northwest Jersey and later developed a foreclosure prevention program for families as well as the non-profit Family Promise of WCNJ focused on services and programs that advance family self-sufficiency and child literacy and education, health and wellbeing, music and arts. Smith worked with GriefShare as a facilitator and The Compassionate Friends in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for grieving parents and siblings plus he worked with parents of special needs children having created, developed, and served as moderator for the non-profit Caring for Kids Conferences and having served as Annual Chairman for March of Dimes in New Jersey for March for Babies events. Smith also served on various boards and as volunteer for children organizations and after-school programs as well as addiction and recovery programs for teens. Lastly, Smith is a certified facilitator for the CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program.
Richard Smith resides with his wife, Kathleen, in Bonita Springs Florida.
